How to Build in a Kitchen Food Steamer

A kitchen steamer is a handy and useful appliance in a kitchen. When your steamer is inconvenient to use – because it’s packed away in a cupboard or not working properly – there is a quick method available for steaming food. The steamer is assembled from pots and pans available in many kitchens along with a reusable foil pan. It requires no special tools and takes approximately 15 minutes of work to prepare the foil pan. The steamer is ready to use again and again.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a one-half size foil steam table pan with dimensions of 12 inches by 10 inches by 4.5 inches.

    • 2

Use a craft knife to cut a series of holes at one end of the pan that measure ½ inch by 2 inches. Place these holes in a row – side by side – approximately 1 inch apart.

    • 3

Create another row of holes 1 inch beneath the first row, and add succeeding rows down the length of the pan.

    • 4

Fill the foil pan with carrots, potatoes or the food that requires steaming.

    • 5

Set the food-filled foil pan on top of a 6-quart stewpot full of water.

    • 6

Invert an 8-quart stainless steel bowl, and place it on top of the food-filled foil pan.

    • 7

Turn the burner on to medium, and steam the food as you would when using any other type of steamer.
