Removing Microwave Ovens From Overhead Stoves

Microwave ovens mounted over a stove, range or cooktop can be removed for repairs or replacement. The appliance mounts on a support plate bolted into the wall studs behind and above the stove. Additional support comes from hardware through the cabinet above the microwave. Get a friend to help with this project, since the microwave is bulky and may be difficult for one person to handle when disconnecting the appliance from its supports.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the cabinet doors above the appliance and disconnect the power cord from the socket inside. If the microwave is not mounted below a cabinet, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet above or below the appliance.

    • 2

Unscrew the bolts inside the cabinet’s bottom that screw into the microwave’s top while your helper supports the appliance from below. Pull each bolt out of the cabinet and place them out of the way.

    • 3

Hold one of the appliance’s bottom front corners while your helper holds the other. Tip the bottom front edge upward while pushing up on the appliance from underneath.

    • 4

Lift the microwave up off the wall bracket. Lower the microwave with your helper to the cooled stove top.

    • 5

Guide the power cord downward and through the hole in the underside of the cabinet. Pull the plug through the hole to free the microwave for removal.
