How to Replace an Over-the-Range Maytag Microwave

Microwave ovens are relatively small appliances that can fit comfortably in many areas of a kitchen. Many home builders started designing kitchens with over-the-range fixtures for microwave ovens. This allows you to install a microwave right over your oven range to save space. Like any other electrical device, your Maytag microwave can break down. In that case you'll need to remove and replace the microwave yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the breaker box in your home and switch the breaker that controls the exhaust fan over the stove to the "Off" position.

    • 2

Unplug the power cord running from the back of the microwave. Often the cord and plug are in the cabinet above the microwave.

    • 3

Locate the bolts on the shelf above the microwave and grip the bolts with your adjustable wrench. Turn the bolts counterclockwise to loosen and remove.

    • 4

Remove all screws on the bottom of the microwave, near the back. Lift up the rear of the microwave to release it from the metal bracket attached to the wall. Set the microwave aside.

    • 5

Check the rear of your Maytag microwave to see if it fits in the bracket already on the wall. If it doesn't fit, remove the screws securing the bracket to the wall, then remove the bracket.

    • 6

Attach a bracket that's compatible with your model of Maytag microwave to the wall, using the power drill. A bracket may come with the microwave; if it doesn't, purchase one from an appliance or hardware store.

    • 7

Fit the microwave in the range space and slide the rear of the unit over the mounting bracket.

    • 8

Use your screwdriver to tighten the included mounting screws at the back of the microwave.

    • 9

Affix the toggle bolts to the attachments on top of the microwave. Secure them to the upper shelf with the bolts. Tighten the bolts with your wrench.

    • 10

Plug the power cable into an available outlet.
