How to Install an Under-Counter Microwave

Many homeowners are opting to install their microwave ovens under the counter along the side wall or in a kitchen island a couple of feet off the floor. Drawer-type microwaves are especially suited for this. The microwave oven is out of sight, and older children and people in wheelchairs can access it easily. The cabinetry for an under-counter microwave must be custom built to the dimensions of the specific dimensions of the microwave.

Build a wooden cutout cabinet space under the counter that is large enough to house your particular microwave. The installation directions will have specific measurements for you to follow. In general, the cutout area must be the exact size for the body of the microwave to slide in. Inside, there must be a minimum clearance space between the cabinet walls and the sides, top and back of the microwave, usually 2 or more inches. The bottom of the cabinet must be flush with the bottom of the cutout. It must be level and sturdy enough to hold the weight of the microwave and any food and containers placed in it. The cabinet facing around the cutout area must be wide enough to accommodate the faceplate around the front of the microwave. Ensure there is enough space in front of the counter for the microwave door or drawer to open fully.

Install an electrical outlet on the back wall of the microwave space. The outlet must be grounded. Microwaves draw a lot of power, so use an electrical circuit separate from other major appliances.

    • 3

Screw a wooden block in the back, upper right corner of the microwave cabinet space with at least two screws. The block should be about 1-by-4-by-6 inches. The 4-inch side will be flat against the top and the 6-inch side will extend along the back of the space. This block will clear the microwave housing by an inch or so, but it will prevent it from tipping.

Set the microwave next to the cutout. Extend the cord into the cabinet and plug it into the outlet. Slide the body of the microwave into the cutout until the faceplate is flush with the cabinetry facing. Test that the microwave works properly. Then screw the mounting screws that came with the microwave into the screw holes in the faceplate. You will probably have to open the door or drawer to see the holes.
