How to Clean Microwave Vents

Microwave ovens may have vents in the interior, in the back, on the bottom and on the top. The location and type of vent depends on the type of microwave. Countertop microwaves usually have a vent in the back and some small round vents in the inner walls, while microwaves installed over a stove top also may have exhaust vents that act as a range hood for the stove. All types of vents should be cleaned periodically.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix 1 cup water and 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar in a small bowl. Place the bowl in the microwave. Run the microwave on high for three minutes. Allow the solution to sit inside the microwave for five minutes with the door closed.

    • 2

Open the microwave door. The inside is steamy and wet. Remove the bowl. Put on rubber gloves, then wipe the interior vents with a microfiber cloth.

    • 3

Allow the vinegar to sit for three to five minutes until it's cool enough to touch. Dip the cloth into the heated vinegar. Wipe the vents on the outside of the microwave to remove any grease and dust buildup.

    • 4

Dip a cotton swab into the warm vinegar. Use the tip to clean the vents in areas where the microfiber cloth can't reach.

    • 5

Rinse the microfiber cloth with water and wring it out. Wipe the interior and exterior vents with the damp cloth to remove the vinegar residue.
