My Sharp Microwave Oven's Turntable Does Not Turn

The turntable within a microwave is used to rotate the food while the oven is on, helping the food to cook evenly. If this turntable does not turn, the food may be hot on one side and ice cold on the other. You can troubleshoot your Sharp microwave oven to determine what is causing this issue -- and how to fix it.
  1. A Broken Turntable

    • Carefully examine the turntable. Flip it over and look at both sides. If you see any glass chips or cracks, this can prevent the turntable from turning properly on its stand. In this instance, the turntable will need to be replaced. To prevent turntable breakage or cracking, be careful when placing dishes on it, and never wash it in cold water right after it has been used in the microwave -- this will crack it.

    Cleaning the Turntable

    • Built up food particles and grease may also cause a turntable to stop functioning. Check the underside, particularly over the grooves where it sits on the stand. Use a gentle degreasing liquid soap and thoroughly clean off the turntable. This should be done whenever you cook something greasy, or at least once a week, to keep it clean and free from food particles. If the turntable has built up food or grease, soak it for at least 15 minutes before wiping it clean.

    Realigning the Turntable

    • The simplest solution is resetting a turntable. If it has fallen off its stand or is not aligned properly, it will cause thumping noises or strange sounds when the microwave is on. Take the turntable out of the microwave and make sure the plastic stand is aligned within its grooves. Place the turntable back on the stand and line it up properly. You should feel it click into place. Whenever you place something heavy on the turntable or if you bump it, you should check the alignment.

    Finding Replacement Parts

    • If the stand for the turntable is broken, or the turntable itself is cracked, you will need to replace these parts. Contact Sharp's customer service line for assistance. They will be able to direct you to a certified parts dealer, or if your microwave is still under warranty, they may replace the parts for you. Keep in mind that if your unit is under warranty, taking it to an unauthorized repair shop may cancel the warranty, so always go through the manufacturer first.
