How to Replace a Kenmore Under-Cabinet Microwave

Whether substituting for a damaged unit or upgrading for new features, you may feel the urge for a new under-cabinet microwave. If you already own a Kenmore under-cabinet microwave and merely want to replace it, half the installation work is already done. The wall bracket and electrical connections are in place. Just recruit a friend to help uninstall the old appliance and move the new one into position. Use the existing wall bracket already bolted in place. The new microwave must measure the same dimensions as the old Kenmore in order to fit under the cabinet.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the current Kenmore from the electrical socket in the overhead cabinets.

    • 2

Disconnect the vent in the cabinet from the top of the Kenmore if your appliance is vented. The screws remove from the lip around the vent with a screwdriver. If your Kenmore uses a filter system in the top-front grille and you do not have a vent, skip this step.

    • 3

Twist out and remove the screws from inside the cabinet where the hardware connects to the top of the Kenmore. Have your helper hold the appliance steady while you take out this hardware. Save all screws and the washers underneath them.

    • 4

Tip the bottom edge of the microwave forward and upward, with help from your assistant. Push up from the bottom to unhook the metal connectors on the back of the appliance from the slots on the steel brackets fastened to the wall.

    • 5

Lower the appliance to the counter, pausing to ease the power plug out of the opening in the underside of the cabinet. You can now remove the old Kenmore.

    • 6

Line up the new appliance under the cabinet, with the door and control panel facing forward into the kitchen.

    • 7

Lift the power cord and insert the plug through the cabinet opening. Do not plug in the cord yet.

    • 8

Raise the Kenmore until the top rests against the bottom of the cabinet. Raise the bottom edge of the appliance forward and guide the hooks on the back into the slots on the wall bracket. The hooks on the left and right must engage with the wall brackets.

    • 9

Place the washers on the screws removed in Step 3 and thread the screws through the holes in the cabinet bottom into the openings on top of the new Kenmore. Tighten each screw with the screwdriver while your helper holds the new appliance.

    • 10

Fasten the vent to the port on the top of the microwave using the screws removed in Step 2. Skip this step if replacing with a filtered appliance.

    • 11

Plug in the power cord to the outlet inside the cabinet.
