Are All Spacemaker Microwave Ovens the Same Size?

General Electric began in 1878 as the Edison Electric Light Company, under Thomas A. Edison. It has become a multinational company that produces household appliances such as dishwashers, ovens, air conditioners and laundry machines. Its Spacemaker ovens, which are part of the company’s microwave line, vary in size and capacity.
  1. Basics

    • GE Spacemaker microwave ovens are so-called because they can clear the countertops of the appliances. Their compact sizes vary, but they are relatively lightweight, allowing mounting on top of an oven or under a cabinet. However, some models can also be left on the counter in kitchens with plenty of space. Specifications for current models start at 1.5 cubic feet, with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $219, and go up to 2.1 cubic feet, and a price of $869. Prices are from GE and current at the time of publication. There are dozens of models.

    Low

    • The GE Spacemaker Over-The-Range Microwave JVM1540DMBB is one of the smallest models at 1.5 cubic feet and the cheapest one with an MSRP of $219. It measures 29.87 by 16.41 inches by 15.25 inches, weighs about 51 pounds and uses up to 950 watts. Its electronic touch controls allow cooking and reheating with one touch, as well as automatically or manually specified defrost times. A glass turntable enables even heating, and a removable oven rack allows the cooking of several dishes at the same time. Both parts and labor have a limited one-year warranty.

    Mid-Range

    • The midpriced GE Profile Spacemaker 1.9 Cubic Foot Over-the-Range Microwave PNM1971SRSS has an MSRP of $549. Although it has a cubic foot capacity greater than the previously mentioned low-end model, it takes up less space at 29.87 by 16.87 by 15.87 inches. It uses up to 1,000 watts and has sensor-cooking controls that tailor time and power to specific dishes automatically. A standby mode reduces power when the unit is not in use, and the interior is easy to clean of spills and dried food. The memory contains preprogrammed recipes to help with menu planning and meal prep.

    High

    • The GE Profile Spacemaker 2.1 Cubic Foot Over-the-Range Microwave PVM2170SRSS is the oven with the largest capacity. It has an MSRP of $699 and measures 29.94 by 16.87 by 15.37 inches, with 1,000 watts and a control dial for easily setting the oven or choosing recipes. The most expensive Spacemaker oven costs $869 and is the GE Profile Spacemaker XL 1800 36-Inch Microwave JVM3670BF. It measures 35.875 by 16.41 by 15.25, has a capacity of 1.8 cubic feet and uses up to 1,100 watts. A hidden vent improves appearance and cleaning, while quick defrost works up to a pound of meat, poultry or fish in minutes.
