New Microwave Has a Weird Grating Sound

Strange noises from a microwave are never a comforting sound -- especially when they can lead to microwave failure, dangerous burnouts and expensive repairs. It is common for microwaves to make loud buzzing, grating and rumbling sounds before they fail or develop internal problems that need to be rectified. If you hear an unexpected grating sound, the source could one of several components.
  1. Moving Components

    • If your microwave has a tray that turns or moves, this component should be the first place that you look for the problem. If this tray becomes misaligned or the rotary mechanism becomes stuck, it can produce the grating noise you are hearing. Sometimes the fan belt of the microwave can also make these noises for similar reasons. Cleaning and realigning these parts may solve your problem.

    Motor Issues

    • The motor itself, which turns the tray and operates any fan mechanisms, can also be a source of grinding noises. If a motor is faulty or starts burning, it can produce loud churning sounds that indicate a lack of proper insulation or lubrication. You may be able to fix the motor if the problem is a minor one, but you may need to replace the system entirely if the motor is already ruined.

    Electrical Issues

    • A number of electrical components can also making unusual noises in your system. The power diode that the microwave uses to channel current can malfunction, creating a heat failure and loud buzzing noise. The capacitor, which stores a continual charge, can develop similar issues. The magnetron itself can also begin to fail. Following all safety procedures, including unplugging the microwave and removing any metal jewelry, test the electrical system with a multimeter and replace the faulty components.

    Calling Professional Help

    • If you do not have experience dealing with a microwave and cannot narrow down what is causing the strange noise, call in professional help. Ask a contractor who has experience with your brand of microwave to take a look at it. Since your microwave is new, it may naturally make louder sounds when it operates. A professional will be able to tell if anything is really wrong and where the noise is coming from.
