My Magic Chef Microwave's Fan Is Making a Clicking Noise but It Still Works

Microwaves use radiation that can cause damage to person and property if incorrectly managed. A malfunction in a microwave, no matter how insignificant, can stem from any of several factors and may cause serious damage if left untended. Before calling a service professional, make some basic operational checks.
  1. Fan Blade

    • If the fan is making a clicking noise, the problem may stem from the fan itself. Even slightly bent or misaligned blades can come into contact with other parts of the microwave when spinning. This poses a serious danger to the microwave, since the fan blades could damage the inner workings or spark against the casing. Unplug the microwave immediately if the fan blades appear bent and contact a service professional for repair or replacement options.

    Grill

    • Of course, the fan need not exhibit bends or misalignment if the vent grill protecting it is bent inward. Examine the outer cover of the microwave; if the rear grill is bent inward, the sound is coming from the fan blades scraping the parts of the grill that are out of alignment. Unfortunately, the metal blades scraping against the metal casing can cause sparks inside the microwave. Power down the unit and repair before using the microwave again.

    Debris

    • The vent fan helps keep the inner workings of the microwave cool during operation. While the microwave chamber is mostly sealed during operation, overcooked food or food with oils can mean buildup or waft debris into the fan. Enough buildup or debris may account for clicking from the microwave fan. Additionally, insects or small items may fall through the vent grill outside the microwave. While mild cases of buildup are innocuous, serious cases and instances where debris is causing a clicking noise require immediate attention from a service professional.

    Not the Fan

    • A sound coming from the inner workings of the microwave may not be the vent fan. The magnetron, for example, has a diffuser arm that spins during operation as well. If the magnetron is clicking, the problem may cause irreparable damage to the unit. Unless easily identified, check with a certified technician for a professional diagnostic before attempting repair.
