What Is the Hole In My Countertop Microwave Oven For?

When working efficiently, your microwave oven will heat up and cook food without leaving puddles or excess moisture in and around your microwave. You might notice holes throughout your countertop microwave oven that would be covered up and less noticeable if you installed it on the wall or in a cabinet.
  1. Vents

    • Countertop microwaves have several vents on at least one of the sides. These vents allow for moisture to leave the microwave. These vents extend through your microwave and are actual holes in the appliance. Keep small appliances and decorative items from blocking these vents around your microwave.

    Door Latch

    • Each countertop microwave has a door latch that will fit into holes on the microwave frame. These holes will allow you to lock the door in place while the microwave is on.

    Cleaning Vents and Door Latches

    • Food can drop down the inside as well as the outside of the vents and the holes in the door latch on the microwave. The food can clog up the vents and door latch and cause both to stop working. Always unplug the appliance before working to clean it. To clean the vents, fill a cup with hot water and add several drops of liquid dish soap. Mix until the water is sudsy, and use a scrubbing brush to clean the vents thoroughly.

    Mesh Glass

    • Each microwave is fitted with metal mesh that is inserted between the panes of glass. This prevents the microwaves from moving through the glass and outside the appliance. The mesh holes are small enough that the microwaves cannot pass through the glass and they will bounce back into the microwave. These holes are visible, but they are protected by the two panes of glass.
