How to Replace an Existing Microwave Hood Oven

A hood microwave oven is installed over your kitchen range in order to save space. These microwaves are mounted to the underside of a kitchen cabinet. Because these microwaves usually come pre-installed in a home or apartment, many people think they are a permanent fixture. The fact is, you can remove and replace a hood microwave yourself in an hour or two.

  Unplug the microwave power cable from the outlet.

  Open the cupboards above the microwave, if there are any, and remove the mounting screws in the corners of the bottom of the cabinet. These screws are secured to the top corners of the microwave. Have someone support the bottom of the microwave while you remove the screws.

  Grip the microwave with your helper and lower it from the base of the cupboard to remove it. Set the old microwave aside.

  Remove the screws holding the metal microwave mounting brackets to the wall. Remove the brackets and set them aside.

  Fit the mounting brackets of the new microwave over the wall. The new microwave will likely come with a paper template you can tape to the wall and will contain a diagram of where to place the mounting brackets. Use a level to ensure the brackets are straight.

  Attach the included screws to the mounting brackets.

  Take one side of the new microwave while your partner takes the other and left it up. Tilt the microwave down and slide the back corners of the unit onto the mounting bracket. Slide the microwave power cable through the access hole in the bottom of the cupboard and lift the microwave up so it is flush against the wall.

  Insert the mounting screws into the holes in the bottom of the cupboard and into the access holes in the top of the microwave.

  Tighten the mounting screws into the microwave and plug in the microwave.
