How to Fix a KitchenAid Microwave Latch

When you close your KitchenAid microwave, an interior latch locks the door in place. The microwave will function only when the door is secure, so if the latch is damaged, you won't be able to use the microwave at all. What you may not know is the door on your KitchenAid microwave is designed to be taken apart. Doing so allows you to fix the latch.

Things You'll Need

  • Putty knife or small flat-head screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • New latch assembly

Instructions

    • 1

      Unplug the microwave power cable.

    • 2

Open the microwave door and insert the tip of a putty knife or small flat-head screwdriver in between the plastic interior panel of the door.

    • 3

Work your way around the frame until it pops off. This will expose the internal metal frame of the door.

    • 4

Insert the tip of your putty knife or screwdriver into the seam where the metal frame meets the door. Work your way around the frame, popping the internal clips as you go. This will release the frame and you will have access to the latch.

    • 5

Tighten the screws on the latch assembly with the Phillips screwdriver to secure it to the door. If the latch is damaged beyond repair, you'll need to replace it.

    • 6

Remove the screws holding the latch assembly in place with the Phillips screwdriver and remove the assembly.

    • 7

Fit a new assembly in the old one's place and replace the screws.

    • 8

Snap the door frames of the microwave back into place.
