Hanging a Microwave Over the Stove

A microwave oven is a convenience appliance that is near and dear to most homeowners. With shrinking counter space in most kitchens, it is becoming a top priority to find better locations for microwaves. One such location is above the stove. While this location does free up counter space, keep in mind that you’ll be sacrificing an oven vent, which can result in more grease buildup under the microwave.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the microwave and the space where you’ll be mounting it. Make sure that the space is at least the length of the microwave.

    • 2

Unscrew the cabinet or oven vent that is above the stove and carefully remove it. If you previously had a cabinet in that space, you can reduce the cabinet size with a handsaw to make a small cabinet or shelf to go above the microwave.

    • 3

Run a stud finder across the wall and mark the stud locations. This is where the mounting brackets must be placed.

    • 4

Position the mounting brackets on the wall. Make sure that they are level and exactly where you want the microwave to sit. Mark the brackets' drill holes with a pencil.

    • 5

Drill pilot holes in the marked hole locations.

    • 6

Reposition the brackets and drill the screws tightly into the brackets and studs.

    • 7

Mount your microwave and plug it into the nearest outlet.
