Mounting an Under-the-Cabinet Microwave to Metal Studs

An over-the-counter microwave is supported by metal brackets secured to the back wall, so you can't see how it attaches to the wall. An over-the-range microwave, on the other hand, is first attached at the rear corners to a mounting bracket. This is a delicate task that requires the help of an extra person.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the areas where you intend to install the mounting brackets with a pencil. The mounting brackets will be installed on the wall beneath the cabinet. Your microwave likely comes with a wall template that provides a diagram showing where to place the brackets. Tape the template to the wall in the area you intend to mount the microwave. If you don't have the diagram you can measure the rear dimensions of the microwave to determine where to place the brackets.

    • 2

Place the mounting brackets on the wall and insert the included screws into the holes in the bracket. Tighten them with a screwdriver.

    • 3

Drill holes under the cabinet for the self-aligning screws. These screws will go through the bottom of the cabinet and into the top of the microwave, securing it. Use the included diagram to tell you where to drill the holes. Tape the diagram under the cabinet. Again, if you don't have the diagram, measure the top dimensions of the microwave -- noting the holes into which the screws will fit -- and mark the hole locations on the underside of the cabinet.

    • 4

Drill a hole under the cabinet for the power cable to fit through.

    • 5

Measure the dimensions of the exhaust on top of the microwave and mark it under the cabinet. Cut out the entire marked area on the bottom of the cabinet with your saw to form a vent. An electric hand saw will do the trick.

    • 6

Take one side of the microwave and have an assistant take the other. Lift the microwave up and tilt it towards you. Slide the back corners onto the mounting bracket.

    • 7

Fit the microwave against the wall. Have the assistant hold the microwave in place. Slide the power cable through the hole on the bottom of the cabinet.

    • 8

Install the mounting studs through the bottom of the cabinet and into the mounting holes on top of the microwave.
