Building Code for a Microwave Over a Range

The requirements for an over-the-range microwave can vary among municipality building codes but are also subject to the specifications of your stove and microwave. Over-the-range microwave units have their own set of specifications for installation. Additionally, your stove's manual should have recommendations for clearance above its hot surface. If you're unsure about placement, contact your local building code inspector for information about rules in your area.
  1. Building Codes

    • Building codes related to clearance requirements are specific to your locale, and are also determined by the type of microwave you have. In some cases, city codes require insulated surfaces, such as protected cabinets and range hoods, to be placed no less than 24 inches from the stovetop. If the microwave cabinet is combustible, it needs to be 30 inches above the stovetop, unless it is protected by asbestos or sheet metal.

    National Kitchen and Bath Regulations

    • Building codes are not the only regulations you should consider. The National Kitchen and Bath Association sets standards for ideal designs and measurements, and advises maintaining 24 inches of clearance above the stove for noncombustible surfaces, and 30 inches of clearance for combustible surfaces. Additionally, the Association advises that microwaves be placed 3 inches below the user's shoulder and no higher than 54 inches from the floor. The microwave should not be less than 15 inches off the ground.

    Manufacturer Guidelines

    • Every appliance model is different and some may exhibit more extreme levels of heat than the average appliance. Your manufacturer guidelines should be the primary resource when you are installing an over-the-range microwave. Some manufacturers may only require a clearance of 15 inches, based on the required distance between above-range cabinetry and the space needed for the particular microwave model. Many over-the-range microwaves are equipped with adjoining vent systems and have their own installation requirements.

    Installation

    • Incorporating an over-the-range microwave opens up more counter space by utilizing vertical space. If you are unable to fit your microwave over the stove, there are other space-saving options. Installing the microwave over a free counter or above an oven may have less stringent clearance requirements. Always follow the guidelines that accompany the product you're installing
