How to Install a Kenmore Microwave Oven With a Vent Hood

Position the Kenmore microwave oven in its place over the stove. Determine the best location for the venting output. Mark the position of the corners of the microwave. Mark the places the microwave power cord will need to pass through cabinets to reach an outlet. Remove the microwave.

Configure the rear of the microwave for the desired venting direction, either out the front of the unit, so no wall venting is required, or out the back of the unit, which will require cutting a hole in the wall to vent the air. Adjust this by uncovering the necessary metal covers on the rear of the microwave, which vary from model to model.

Hold the drilling template which came with the microwave up to the wall. Mark the location of the vent hole if necessary and all the screws for the mounting bracket. Drill the holes for the mounting bracket. Pass a stud finder with electrical sensors over the vent hole area to make sure there are no wires running behind it. Contact an electrician if there are readings of electricity in the vent hole area.

Cut out the vent hole with a reciprocating saw. Cut all the way through the exterior wall, working from the outside if necessary once the location is clear when viewed from the exterior. Apply caulking to the wall cap and slide it in place from the outside.

Attach the mounting bracket to the wall with the included mounting screws, using drywall anchors if there are no studs in a hole. Drill out the holes marked for the power cord to pass through the cabinets.

Pass the power cord through the holes and set the microwave in place on its mounting bracket. Plug the microwave in and test the venting function by checking for air leaks around the sides of the microwave. Unplug and remove the microwave if you feel leaks. Surround the vent hole with foam tape or some other type of padding to prevent air leakage.
