How to Hang the Microwave on a Gas Top

An over-the-range microwave oven is designed to be mounted a safe distance above your kitchen cooking surface. This is a considerable undertaking but the end result is that you save a lot of space in your kitchen by getting the microwave off of the counter. Many people think that only professionals can install range microwaves, but that isn't the case. In fact, you can install an over-the-range microwave above a gas cook top in less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of the space above your kitchen range. Make sure the microwave you purchase matches the dimensions of the mounting space.

    • 2

Tape the microwave's two mounting diagrams to the area you intend to mount the microwave. One of the diagrams attaches to the wall and the other attaches under the cabinet where the roof of the microwave is mounted. The diagrams will be labeled.

    • 3

Place the metal mount over the marked area on the diagram. Use a stud finder to locate the studs in the wall and insert the mounting screws in the holes in the mount over the studs. Tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver to secure the mount.

    • 4

Drill holes in the marked areas in the ceiling mount diagram. One of these holes will be for the power cable and four will be for the top mounting bolts.

    • 5

Cut out the area on the diagram marked "Vent" with a hand saw.

    • 6

Lift the microwave up and place its rear bottom corners over the mount. It will be a good idea to have a helper for this step.

    • 7

Run the power cable through the hole in the cabinet.

    • 8

Insert the mounting bolts through the holes in the bottom of the cabinet and into the holes in the top of the microwave. Tighten the bolts to secure the microwave.
