How to Troubleshoot a KitchenAid Convection Oven That Is Smoking & Trips the Breaker

The KitchenAid convection oven uses electricity to remain powered during the baking or cleaning process, and features a built-in self-clean function to eliminate light to heavily soiled stains in its oven interior. The oven's self-clean timer is set to 3.5 hours for heavy soil removal, and may smoke during the cleaning process. During the self-clean cycle the oven's interior heats to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit, and can result in a tripped circuit breaker due to high power consumption. While smoking can be eliminated through minor cleaning prior to self-cleaning, a power issue may require professional service to resolve the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the convection oven's power cord from the power outlet and wait for the oven to cool down. A heated oven cannot be opened due to the oven's door lock feature, and automatically disables the door's latch once cooled.

    • 2

Mix 1 cup of baking soda in a bowl with 1 to 2 tablespoons of water. Mix the ingredients in the bowl with the spoon to create a cleaning paste.

    • 3

Dip the nylon cleaning cloth in the paste and open the oven's door. Wipe down the oven's interior with the paste to clean up excess liquid spills or stains.

    • 4

Wipe off the paste in the oven's interior with a paper towel, and dry the inside of the oven with a new paper towel.

    • 5

Remove any adapters plugged into the nearby electric outlet and remove all other plugged in devices connected to the outlet. Too many appliances plugged into the outlet can trip the breaker, and requires resetting the breaker to restore power.

    • 6

Insert the convection oven's power cord into the outlet and press "Clock Set/Start" to reset the clock.

    • 7

Shut the oven's door and push "Clean" on the oven's control panel. Press "Stop Time" and enter the desired ending time for the self-clean, and push "Start" to begin the self-clean cycle.
