How to Install an Outside Microwave Vent

Microwave cooking produces heat, moisture and odors that need to be vented out of the kitchen. If left unvented, heat and moisture from the microwave can damage the surrounding cabinets and wall. You can install a microwave vent on an outside wall to prevent damage and keep your kitchen odor-free.

Things You'll Need

  • Stud finder

Instructions

    • 1

Place the stud finder against the wall in the location where the microwave oven will be attached. Drag the finder across the wall until it indicates a wall stud. Keep dragging the stud finder across the wall until you find the second wall stud.

    • 2

Tape the rear wall template that came with the microwave oven to the wall between the studs where you want to vent the oven. Cut through the template to make a horizontal vent hole in the wall with a drywall saw.

    • 3

Go outside and attach the vent plate and cap to the exterior wall of your house with screws and a screwdriver. Ensure the cap fits tightly so moisture and insects cannot enter the house through the microwave oven vent.

Go back inside and remove the tape and rear wall template from between the wall studs. Clear out any debris from the newly cut vent.
