Are All Mounting Kits the Same for an Above-Range Microwave?

Above-range microwaves include a mounting kit when purchased. They are also available as a separate accessory purchase if you lose, damage or otherwise don't have a mounting kit. The type of mounting kit that works for one microwave may not work for another. And the kits not only require a rear mount, but also they include parts for connecting the microwave to the cabinet.
  1. Mounting Kits

    • All mounting kits are not the same. They are specifically designed by the manufacturer for the model. The kits must vary in their configuration to properly accommodate hanging the microwave securely. Each kit may vary in precisely where it connects into the appliance and how many screws or bolts are required to support the microwave installation.

    Rear Mount

    • One part of the mounting kit is the rear mounting plate. A template is sometimes provided to direct you as to how to position the mounting plate. Sometimes the plate serves as the template. When the mounting plate is the template, the manufacturer may direct you to position the plate on the wall so it lines up with the bottom of the cabinet. Mark the holes for the screws or bolts on the wall. The template should also include the outline for where to cut into the wall for the outside exhaust.

    Cabinet Mount

    • The mounting kit includes a template for the under cabinet installation. Most above-range microwaves have top support screws. A hole is drilled underneath the cabinet to fit through the power cord. Another cutout is needed to allow enough room for the exhaust adaptor to fit through, if you are venting the microwave to the outside.

    Warnings and Tips

    • Most above-range microwaves cannot be mounted above an island; the proper installation, to support the weight of the microwave, must include a cabinet and wall mounting. Ensure at least one of the screws on the rear mounts into a stud. If most of the holes do not line up with a stud, instead use a toggle bolt to properly support the weight of the microwave.
