How Is a Maytag Over the Ranges Microhood Installed?

Maytag's over-the-range microhood is a combination microwave and ventilation hood. It's installation instructions are like most over-the-range microwaves since they also contain ventilation systems. Installation requires a few tools and supplies. The process involves mounting the microhood, as well as ensuring it's properly ventilated.
  1. Tools and Supplies

    • Have all tools ready before starting the microhood’s installation. Installation requires a measuring tape, pencil, masking tape, stud finder, scissors, Phillips screwdriver, power drill, socket wrench, hole saw, keyhole saw, ductwork, caulking gun with weatherproof compound, duct tape and a selection of drill bits. The microhood box has a perforated, cardboard top. Underneath the top is a template that attaches to the wall where you plan to install the microwave. All screws, bolts, nuts, filters and the mounting plate for the installation are provided by Maytag.

    Mounting

    • The wall chosen for installation must have at least one 2-by-4-foot wood wall stud that supports the microhood’s weight. The appliance must have at least 6 inches of clearance between the wall and the left side so that the door completely open. The included template determines where to place the mounting plate. The stud finder locates the wood post within the wall. Secure the mounting plate to the stud.

    Venting

    • The microhood is vented through either the wall or roof. Maytag does not provide duct pieces required for venting. The venting configuration varies by how much space is between the microwave and outside wall or roof. It also varies with each home because of the varying shape of the space between the microwave and exterior. A transition piece connects to the microhood. Use as many straight duct pieces as possible between the transition piece and the outside vent allowing for greater air flow. This prevents blockages. Secure all duct pieces together at each seam with duct tape. Cap the ventilation end with a roof cap or wall cap.

    Warnings

    • Only use the microhood above ranges with a maximum width of 36 inches. Plug the microhood's power cord into a properly grounded electrical outlet. Grounding reduces the risk of electrical shock. Keep the power cord away from water and heat sources. Do not use an extension cord with the microhood. Do not use the appliance if the power cord is damaged. Inspect the power cord as well as the door, hinges, latches and seals before installing and using the appliance. If the microwave requires servicing, contact a qualified Maytag service company.
