GE Advantium Will Not Microwave

Microwave ovens such as the GE Advantium are a staple in many homes. Just as is the case with other appliances, it is important to know how to address certain common problems you may encounter when using the GE Advantium so you can restore full working order to the microwave without the need to consult a service professional.
  1. Electrical Problems

    • The first place to start when addressing a problem of this nature is to check that the GE Advantium oven has electrical power. Make sure that the microwave oven's electrical cord is firmly plugged into an electrical outlet and that the cord is not damaged in any way. Replace it if it is. Also check the breaker that controls the circuit that the microwave is using to see whether it is tripped. If turning the breaker back on does not restore power to the microwave, you may need to replace a fuse for that circuit.

    Power Surge

    • A GE Advantium often will fail to operate properly after a surge. If you know your home suffered a power surge recently, or if the above steps did not restore the microwave to full working order, unplug the microwave for a few minutes and plug it back in. Test the microwave again; if the microwave now works, it would be wise to plug the microwave's power cord into a surge protector to prevent future power surges from rendering the microwave inoperable.

    Door Seal Problems

    • For safety reasons, microwave ovens are built so that they will not operate unless the door is fully sealed. To troubleshoot this problem, check to make sure the microwave's main door is closed and again attempt to microwave foods. If there is still no power, the microwave's door seal may be deteriorated or damaged so the microwave is prevented from working even though the door is closed. In these cases, you will typically need to replace the microwave as repairing a bad door seal tends to be much more expensive than purchasing a new microwave.

    Contacting GE

    • Of course, sometimes a GE Advantium microwave will simply go out. Contacting GE is the best way to proceed in these cases. A service professional can take you through additional troubleshooting steps and provide recommendations for what to do should troubleshooting fail to bring the microwave back to working order. It is important to contact GE rather than another repair service since the microwave may still be covered under the manufacturer's warranty.
