How to Remove the Facing on the Kenmore Microwave Oven Combination

The facing on a Kenmore microwave oven combination appliance is the colored material that covers the door and front of its traditional oven and built-in microwave oven. Although some appliances -- namely dishwashers -- have removable facings for decorative purposes, this Kenmore's facing is a permanent part of the appliance. For that reason, the only way to remove the facing is to remove the traditional oven's door. The microwave oven's door cannot be removed easily.
  1. Preparation

    • Preparing properly makes removing the traditional oven's door easier than it would be otherwise. Clean out the oven first, removing all pots, pans and racks for ample access to the space. If the oven door has a glass window, lay a towel or blanket on the floor in front of the oven, and take care when handling the door not to knock anything against the glass. If you drop the oven door while you remove it, the towel or blanket will help to cushion the door and may prevent the glass from breaking.

    Removal

    • Removing the door is not difficult, but caution is needed because the door is heavy. The removal process begins with opening the door all the way to expose its hinges. The hinges are on each side at the door's bottom. Unlock the hinges by pulling up the hinge locks, which are directly below the hinges. The top of the locks will slide over the hinge lever hooks, which also are below the hinges. The locks will be in a vertical position, rather than at an angle, if you do the task properly. Firmly grasping the door on both of its sides near its bottom will help you slowly slide the door up and out. As you pull the door out, move the top of it toward the oven until the hinge levers are completely out of the hinge slots.

    Replacement

    • The oven door of the Kenmore microwave oven combination is designed to re-attach easily to the oven's body. To replace the oven door with the same door or one with a different facing, hold the door on each side near its bottom, and line up the door's hinges with the hinge slots. Once the hinges are lined up, they are simple to slide into the hinge slots. Carefully lower the door so that it is fully open, ensuring that the hinges don't pop out of the slots. Locking the hinges into place is essential. It requires disengaging the locks from the hinge lever supports and pushing them down at an angle, which locks them into position. That action secures the door's hinges into the hinge slots.

    Considerations

    • The oven's door is made to be removed easily in order to clean the oven, not necessarily to replace the door with a different door and facing. The built-in microwave oven's door is not meant to be removed at all, unless done so by a professional appliance repairman.
