How-to-Install Instructions for a Tappan Over Range Microwave

The over-range microwave oven is a space-saving solution in many kitchens. Numerous models are available, including the Tappan line by Frigidaire. For example, the Tappan model TMV151FBA is a 1.5-cubic-foot over-range microwave oven that includes a cooktop light and grease filter. It uses recirculating ventilation without ducts, so it is a fairly simple installation for the do-it-yourself homeowner.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the range and the cabinets above it. Also measure the distance from the top of the range to the bottom of the cabinet. Allow at least 18 inches between the bottom of the new Tappan microwave and the range top.

    • 2

Pull the range away from the base cabinets. Unplug the range from the wall, and move it out of the way. This will make installation of the microwave easier.

    • 3

Open the microwave box. Remove the instructions, glass tray and hardware. Do not remove the protective Styrofoam insert.

    • 4

Remove the microwave from the box by turning the box upside down. Lift the box off of the microwave.

    • 5

Remove the mounting plate from the back of the microwave.

    • 6

Locate the studs in the wall with a stud finder. Mark the center point of each stud with a pencil. Using a spirit level, draw a vertical line down the center of each stud.

    • 7

Tape the rear wall template to the wall, centering it over the range and aligning at least one hole, A, B or C, with a wall stud.

    • 8

Tape the cabinet template to the bottom of the cabinet, aligning it with the rear wall template.

    • 9

Drill all the mounting holes in the wall and cabinet. Insert toggle bolts for drywall installation and wood screws for the studs. If the outlet for the microwave is inside the cabinet, use a spade bit to drill a larger hole for the power cord.

    • 10

Install the mounting plate on the rear wall, aligning with the template. Use a spirit level to ensure it is perfectly level.

    • 11

Lift the microwave onto the mounting plate. Have a helper assist you in tipping the microwave forward, latching the back onto the mounting plate, then tipping it back until it is against the wall.

    • 12

Open the cabinet door while your helper holds the microwave in place. Insert the screws through the bottom of the cabinet and screw into the microwave. Tighten both screws to secure the microwave.

    • 13

Install the grease filter before plugging the microwave into the outlet. Reinstall the range.
