Kenmore Microwave Light Is Not Working

Typically, the light in your Kenmore microwave oven will last well over five years with normal use. While the light is a useful part of the unit’s function, a malfunctioning one is no reason to discard the appliance as it can often be fixed. The problem could be anything, from no electricity to a blown light or a wiring issue.
  1. Light Function

    • The light on your Kenmore microwave may seem like a minor feature, but it’s actually one of the more helpful functions in the unit. The instructions for microwaving foods generally recommend that you carefully monitor the food as it cooks. The light lets you do that. It also lets you see inside the unit while cleaning or servicing it.

    Electricity To the Unit

    • If you notice that your Kenmore microwave’s light is not working, check if any of the indicator lights or the display is working. If it’s not, the appliance may not be receiving electricity. Check that the unit is plugged into a working electrical outlet. Then check the fuse or breaker box to make sure that the fuse is intact or the breaker for the kitchen is flipped in the "On" position. If everything seems to be in working order, the next thing to check is the bulb.

    Blown Light Bulb

    • Locate the bulb access panel, which can vary depending on the model of Kenmore microwave you have. Remove any screws that hold the panel in place. Unscrew the bulb from its holder and shake it next to your ear. If you hear something rattling inside the bulb, it’s a broken filament. Replace the old bulb with a new one of the same size and wattage to fix the problem.

    Wiring Issues

    • If electricity is getting to your Kenmore microwave and the bulb is still good, the reason your light may not be working may have to do with the wiring. You’ll have to take apart the lighting assembly and check that the wiring is in working order. This process varies, depending on your model of Kenmore microwave. Remember that if you allow someone other than a certified Kenmore repair technician to work on your microwave, you will void any warranties you may have on the unit. Call Kenmore customer support at (800) 424-2047 to locate a certified technician in your area or a service manual if you plan to repair the unit yourself.
