The Removal of a Built-In KitchenAid Microwave

Built-in KitchenAid microwaves are secured directly to the cabinetry, with some models and configurations requiring a bracket system to secure the appliance. Removal of the microwave requires fully removing all screws and brackets before the microwave is slid out of the cabinet. The task shouldn't take long, especially if you have the right tools and enough assistance.
  1. Required Tools and Assistance

    • A screwdriver and an electric drill with a drill bit -- usually around 2 millimeters -- are needed for removal. Because of the weight of the microwave and the removal procedure, at least two people are required to safely remove the microwave. At least one person must support the microwave while the other person removes the supports and unplugs the microwave.

    Preparation

    • Remove any loose items from the microwave before removal. Open the microwave door to access the screws attaching the microwave to the cabinet. Have at least one person hold onto the front of the microwave.

    Removal

    • Have the second person loosen and remove the four screws holding the microwave to the cabinet while the microwave is held in place. Some cabinet installations may have a bracket on each side of the microwave. Make sure the screws are loosened and the brackets removed before proceeding with removal. Once the screws and brackets are removed, close the door, and make sure the microwave is securely held onto since it is no longer held in place by the screws and brackets. Have the microwave moved slowly and carefully out of the cabinet, but stop as soon as the power cord is accessible. Unplug the power cord before moving the microwave any further. With the microwave held securely, lift it out of the cabinet.

    Warning

    • Failing to use more than one person to remove the microwave may result in injuries, including back injuries. Do not use the brackets, frame or trim to lift the microwave; fully support the microwave underneath as it is lifted.
