How to Change the Humidity Sensor for a GE Microwave

Some modern microwaves, including those made by General Electric, come with a built-in humidity sensor. This component senses the internal moisture of the machine and shuts off the unit during an automatic cooking cycle. If the humidity sensor is broken, the microwave won't know when to shut off. A broken sensor should be replaced as quickly as possible. As long as you follow the appropriate safety procedures, you can perform this task in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your GE microwave and unplug the power cable.

    • 2

Remove all screws from the access panel located on the back of the microwave. Make sure you are using a Phillips screwdriver with an insulated handle.

    • 3

Remove the access panel to gain access to the internal components of the microwave, including the metal, cylindrical-shaped capacitor. There are two electrical terminals on top of the capacitor.

    • 4

Touch the tip of your insulated Phillips screwdriver to one of the terminals and slide it over to the other terminal. Hold the tip of the screwdriver on the terminal. After a few seconds a small spark should appear. This signals that the capacitor is discharged.

    • 5

Locate the metal disc connected to the main circuit board of the microwave via wiring. This is the humidity sensor.

    • 6

Remove the mounting screw holding the sensor in place and unplug the sensor wiring from the board. Remove the sensor.

    • 7

Plug the wiring of a new sensor into the board and secure the sensor with the mounting screw.

    • 8

Replace the rear panel of the microwave.
