How to Check the Fan Vent in a Whirlpool Microwave

Not all microwaves require fan vents, but if yours is an over-the-range model, it almost definitely does. Unlike countertop units, range hood microwaves must contend with the smoke, grease and odors that a regular range hood sucks up. A built-in fan pulls these cooking byproducts up and into the fan vent, which leads outdoors through the roof or a wall. If the fan works but doesn't seem to be doing anything, the fan vent may be blocked. You can check it yourself, but you'll need to remove the Whirlpool microwave to do so.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the microwave. Remove the glass turntable from inside.

    • 2

Remove the mounting screws from the top of the microwave that are located inside the cabinet above the unit.

    • 3

Pull the top of the microwave toward you so that it tilts out. You should have at least one other person helping you to make sure the unit doesn't fall.

    • 4

Slide the microwave off the mounting brackets at the bottom on the back. Pull the power cord out through the hole in the bottom of the cabinet. Set the microwave aside.

    • 5

Shine a flashlight into the fan vent, which is located over the microwave near the back, to check for an obstruction or grease buildup.
