How to Install a Frigidaire Microwave Vent Hood

Frigidaire began as a subsidiary of General Motors and manufactured refrigerators. As of 2012, Frigidaire — no longer part of GM — still manufactures appliances of its own, including a microwave oven that doubles as a vent hood for your conventional range. This installation not only gets your microwave off the counter to save valuable worktop space, it allows for the venting of steam and cooking vapors from your stove top through existing duct-work or a built-in charcoal filter.

Instructions

    • 1

Twist out the screws on the mounting place affixed to the back side of the microwave with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the mounting plate. Tighten the screws back into the mounting holes on the microwave from which they were removed.

    • 2

Locate the framing studs within the wall on which the microwave will be mounted, using a stud finder. Find the center of each stud by probing the drywall on each side of the vertical edges of the stud with a small nail. Use a framing square to draw a vertical line on the wall down the center of each stud.

    • 3

Measure the width of the opening between the cabinets that the microwave will fit into and make a mark on the wall at the center point. Make a vertical line on the wall at the center mark with the square.

    • 4

Hold the microwave mounting plate to the wall. Slide the plate upwards so that each of its vertical legs are touching the underside of the upper cabinet. Slide the plate horizontally until the center mark on the plate lines up with the center line you drew on the wall.

    • 5

Make marks through the screw holes in the mounting plate so that they line up with the lines indicating the center point of each stud. Remove the mounting plate and place it aside. Drill through the marks with a 3/16-inch drill bit to make pilot holes for the mounting screws.

    • 6

Replace the mounting plate onto the wall. Secure the plate to the wall by driving the mounting screws through the screw holes and into the pilot holes in the wall. Tighten the screws with a Phillips bit placed into a variable speed power drill.

    • 7

Screw the duct-work adapter plate to the top or rear of the microwave with the screws provided, depending on where the duct-work is located for your stove-top. Do not attach the adapter to the microwave if you wish the microwave to filter the cooking vapors internally with the built-in charcoal filter.

    • 8

Tape the paper template that came with your microwave to the underside of the upper cabinet using the instructions printed on the template. Drill holes for the mounting bolts and the power cord using the template as a guide. Remove the template.

    • 9

Use a helper and lift the microwave up to the opening. Fish the power cord through the hole in the underside of the cabinet. Lower the bottom rear corner of the microwave onto the hooks on the mounting plate. Rotate the microwave upwards so that the adapter plate slides into the end of the duct-work — if applicable — and the threaded holes in the top of the unit line up with the holes you drilled in the underside of the cabinet.

    • 10

Thread the mounting bolts through the holes in the bottom of the cabinet and into the threaded holes in the microwave. Tighten the bolts with a Phillips screwdriver. Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet inside the upper cabinet.
