How to Remove a Whirlpool Undercounter Microwave

Under-the-counter microwaves are serious space savers. Most mount over the oven and serve dual purposes. Undercounter microwaves provide a cook top light and range hood as part of the unit. The convenience of its location--built into the overhead cabinet--is an added advantage. However, even the most dependable kitchen appliances eventually need replacing. A Whirlpool microwave mounts under the counter similar to most other brands. A bracket mounts to the wall directly behind the microwave. Two or more lips on the rear of the microwave latch into the bracket during installation. With the bracket securing the back of the microwave, two fasteners support the front of the microwave through the bottom of the overhead cabinet.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the contents from the cabinet area directly above the microwave. Fasteners run through the bottom of the cabinet to the top of the microwave. Removing the cabinet's contents allows access to remove the fasteners.

    • 2

Clear off the top of the counter or stove directly underneath the microwave. Place a heavy quilt or blanket over the surface. In the event the microwave slips while removing it, the blanket will absorb the fall and minimize damage.

    • 3

Unplug the microwave. The power cord plugs into a receptacle inside the overhead cabinet. Simply pull the standard plug out of the receptacle and lay it in the cabinet until the microwave is ready for removal.

    • 4

Support the front edge of the microwave. Removing the unit takes two people. One person supports the microwave while the second person removes the fasteners from inside the overhead cabinet.

    • 5

Remove the two fasteners from inside the overhead cabinet with a large Phillips screwdriver. As the screws become loose, the weight of the microwave will pull the front of the unit downward. Hold it against the top cabinet until the fasteners are entirely out.

    • 6

Grab the microwave on each side using two people--one on each side. Lower the front of the unit approximately 6 inches. Lift up slightly on the back of the microwave to unhook it from the wall bracket.

    • 7

Lower the microwave to the counter top and pull the power cord free from the overhead cabinet.
