How Do I Remove a Microwave Oven?

An over-the-range microwave oven is a space-saving convenience. Every inch of counter space spared by a counter-mounted appliance is a welcome addition to the kitchen. When the time comes to upgrade, or simply replace, the microwave, removing the existing unit is obviously job number one. The cabinet above--and the wall behind--the microwave often, holds the unit in place with bolts and brackets.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the countertop, or range top, directly beneath the microwave of all dishes, appliances, and other kitchen accessories.

    • 2

Spread a heavy blanket or old quilt over the area below the microwave to protect the surface. The blanket will also aid when cleaning up after microwave removal.

    • 3

Unplug the microwave from the wall outlet.

    • 4

Open the cabinet doors above the microwave and locate the bolts at the bottom of the cabinet. Two bolts near the front edge of the cabinet bottom hold the microwave under the cabinet.

    • 5

Remove the bolts with either a socket and ratchet, or a large Phillips screwdriver, depending on the type of hardware used. Have someone hold the microwave up along the front of the unit while removing the bolts. Take the bolts completely out before preparing to lower the microwave.

    • 6

Tilt the front edge of the microwave down at a 45-degree angle. With the microwave tilted, lift up on the back of the unit to remove it from the wall-mounted bracket. Clips located on the back of the microwave rest into opposing clips on the wall-mount.

    • 7

Gently set the microwave down onto the blanket.
