Problems With Toaster Ovens

Toaster ovens are counter top kitchen appliances that lie between large toasters and tiny ovens. They are an easy and efficient way to reheat, toast and bake foods. Over time and use, toaster ovens may develop functionality problems, but they can typically be managed with a routine service or cleaning.
  1. Limited Functionality

    • Toaster ovens are often advertised as a one-stop-solution to all baking and cooking problems. In reality, however, most toaster ovens used in residential kitchens are too small to effectively bake, reheat or defrost larger or multiple items, owing to their compact size.

    Plastic Leaching

    • Most people are unaware of the health hazards associated with using plastic wrap in toaster ovens and microwave ovens. According to Norma Lehmeier Hartie in the book "Harmonious Environment," plastic food wraps leach chemicals into food items when overheated. Heating plastic items migrate BPA (bisphenol A), a toxic chemical, into food, according to Kimberley Blaine in the book "The Go-To Mom's Parents' Guide to Emotion Coaching Young Children."

    Constant Maintenance

    • Toaster ovens need to be kept clean of all grease splatters, fingerprints and leftover food particles, which harbor germs and are a potential fire hazard if left to accumulate. Cleaning a toaster oven is somewhat of a cumbersome task that must be thoroughly performed at least once a week to stretch its serviceable life. Ideally, its rack and crumb tray should be washed daily, especially if heavily used. Interiors with nonstick finishes must be cleaned with a mild detergent wash or according to manufacturer's instructions. Stubborn grease stains must be eliminated with rubbing alcohol. Toaster oven roofs are often the toughest to clean. They tend to accumulate grease due to their nonstick finish and must be carefully wiped clean.

    Burns

    • Toaster ovens are liable to cause burns if people handle extremely hot containers and foods or touch the surface of the oven while it is switched on.

Mechanical Problems and Excessive Power Consumption

    • Toaster ovens run on electricity and are vulnerable to faults, as are almost all other electrical appliances. Their temperature thermostat may need recalibration (adjustment) or replacement. Toaster oven parts tend to deteriorate after regular use. Solenoids, heating elements, thermal fuses and main switches develop faults and require repair or replacement. It is not uncommon for toaster oven electrical cords to burn out, warranting replacement.

According to Katharine C. Rathbun in the book "Being Prepared," toaster ovens can be energy inefficient, drawing a lot of power to cook a small amount of food.
