Kenmore Elite Microwave Error Codes

Kenmore Elite microwaves, a division of Kenmore/Sears appliances, may feature a number of error codes to indicate a malfunction and guide you through troubleshooting. Because Kenmore appliances may be produced by a number of separate manufacturers, including well-known brands such as Whirlpool and General Electric as well as lesser-known manufacturers, different microwave models use different error codes. Review your own microwave's manual, or download it from Kenmore's "Manage My Life" website (see Resources).
  1. ERROR 1

    • The code "ERROR 1" may appear in the display screen of Kenmore Elite models 56561582011, 16755, 56561584011 or 56561589011. If you have one of these models and you receive this error code, your microwave oven has not been plugged in for long enough prior to your trying to cook. These models must be plugged into a power supply for at least five minutes before they can function normally. If you try to turn them on prematurely, you'll simply receive this error code, which you can clear by pressing the "Stop/Clear" button. Wait for five minutes before trying again to cook with your microwave. If you have a Kenmore Elite model 56560582, 56560584, 56560582990, 56560586000, DP16579, 56560586, 56560589990 or 56560589, an "ERROR 1" indicates that the door was opened before the time countdown could appear in the display. You can simply clear the code and resume cooking.

    ERROR 2

    • If your Kenmore Elite is a model number 56560582, 56560584, 56560582990, 56560586000, DP16579, 56560586, 56560589990 or 56560589, an "ERROR 2" signal indicates that the microwave oven has not been plugged in for a sufficient time prior to cooking. The procedure is the same as for the ERROR 1 code on other models. Press the "Clear" button, and, after waiting at least five minutes, re-enter your cooking instructions.

    Alphanumeric Codes

    • If you have a Kenmore Elite Microwave model number 40188522900, 40188529900 or 40188523900, you may see alphanumeric error codes that do not include the word "ERROR." For example, if your microwave display indicates E-11, E-12 or E-13, the unit has a defect related to its sensor device. You'll need to have the microwave serviced or replaced. While all three "E" codes indicate the same general problem, take a note of which code you see to inform the service technician. If your microwave gives you an "SE" code, it is experiencing a defect in the control panel. Again, you'll need to contact Kenmore or an authorized service technician for repair or replacement.
