The convection oven bakes, roasts and performs other cooking chores much like a full-size oven but takes less time and uses less electricity. The microwave functions like a regular microwave. Weighing in at a hefty 52 lbs., the convection microwave's control pad is on the right side of the appliance and includes a digital clock and timer readout. The oven has 10 power levels and settings for defrost/preheat, extend cook, one-touch cooking levels for items like popcorn and sandwiches and sensor controls for cooking foods to temperatures set by the user.
The cord is 4.25 feet long, and the oven comes in white, black and stainless steel to match most kitchen decor. The microwave cooks at a maximum of 1,000 watts and the convection oven offers 1,500 watts of cooking power. As of November 2010, the oven costs $329 at both Sears and Kmart.
At a depth of 20 inches and width of 22 7/8 inches, the Kenmore Elite oven takes up a big chunk of counter space. The roomy 15 1/4 x 15-1/4 inch inner width and height coupled with an 11-inch-deep cooking space allows the owner to use a variety of dish sizes in the oven, however. An automatic 12-5/8 diameter turntable works well with most dishes, though avoid using a rectangular dish that is too large to rotate to prevent damaging the turntable mechanism.
The oven has a warm/hold feature to keep foods at a serving temperature beyond the cooking cycle. The convection controls include cook, auto bake and auto roast, and allow the cook to combine the bake and roast functions. No buttons or latches are required to open the door; simply pull it open.
In addition to the manufacturer's warranty that comes with the appliance, Kenmore offers additional repair plans that extend protection beyond the one-year original warranty period. The three-year Master Protection agreement costs $40, and the five-year agreement costs $60 in November 2010. The plans include in-shop repairs, which means you have to take the appliance to the repair shop, but there is no fee for parts or labor, and you can get help over the phone to troubleshoot the appliance. If the oven cannot be repaired, the extended warranty plans guarantee replacement.
