How to Replace the Handle on a GE SpaceMaker Microwave

GE Spacemaker microwave ovens are available in over-the-range or countertop models. Both models rely on a door handle, which is used to pull open the door, allowing food to be inserted into or removed from the inner cavity. After prolonged use, the door handle may crack or even break, requiring replacement. New door handles can be purchased from GE's parts website (see Resources), and the new handle can be installed quickly, without the need for a service call.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect power to the microwave by unplugging it from the wall, or turning off the breaker in the fuse box.

    • 2

      Open the microwave door.

    • 3

Pry off the plastic panel cover on the inside of the microwave door using the flat-head screwdriver. When the plastic cover is removed, the screws securing the handle to the door will be exposed. Use extreme care while prying the plastic cover, as it may break under excessive force.

    • 4

Remove the two screws securing the door handle to the microwave door, then remove the handle.

    • 5

Align the new handle, then secure it in place with the two screws that were removed.

    • 6

Snap the plastic panel cover that was pried off back into place to complete the installation.
