How to Open a GE Spacemaker Microwave for Service

GE Spacemaker microwaves are designed for use in a residential kitchen. If you need to replace an internal component of the microwave or send a part, such as the control panel, in for service, you will need to open the microwave. You should only attempt to open a microwave if you are familiar with appliance repair, to avoid injury or further damage to the microwave.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect power to the microwave by unplugging it from the wall. Alternatively, disable the microwave's switch in the circuit breaker.

    • 2

Open the door of the GE Spacemaker, then remove the two screws located on the left and right sides of the grill at the top of the microwave.

    • 3

Remove the grill once the screws are removed by pulling it straight off of the microwave. Located behind the grill is the upper duct assembly and ventilation motor.

    • 4

Remove the single screw located on the top of the control panel that was previously covered by the grill.

    • 5

Lift the control panel up and out of the microwave, then unclip the wires connected to the rear of the panel. Be sure to label the wires for reassembly. Behind the control panel you will find critical elements to your microwave, such as the magnetron and power supply.
