How Does a Microwave Hood Work?

A microwave hood helps disperse the smoke, steam and smell of the food being cooked in the microwave. If the microwave is mounted above a stove it may also help disperse fumes from cooking on the stove top.
  1. Intake

    • A fan installed in the microwave hood sucks in the smoke, steam, fumes or scents from the items in the microwave.

    Exhaust

    • The air sucked in to the hood by the intake is expelled by the other side of the fan blades and, depending on how your microwave hood is installed, the air may be expelled through a pipe that ends outside or it may be dispersed throughout the room.

    Maintenance

    • Microwave fume hoods have filters that are typically made out of woven metal. These filters collect evaporated grease and other byproducts of the cooking process. The filters are easily removable and can either be cleaned with hot water and a degreasing soap and reinstalled or replaced by a new filter when the old one becomes clogged. The filters are on the outside of the fume hood and are easily snapped in and out of place.
