What Do You Use in the Microwave in Place of Plastic Wrap?

Warnings persist that using plastic wrap in the microwave poses health hazards and many microwave users find the wrap's tendency to cling to food bothersome. Choosing alternate materials for the task is an easy solution.
  1. Container Solutions

    • Many ceramic, plastic and glass containers are labeled microwave-safe and are easy to use for cooking food or reheating leftovers. Avoid using containers that purchased food comes in, such as soft margarine or whipped topping packages as these commonly melt or release chemicals into food when exposed to microwaves.

    Wrap Options

    • Wax paper, parchment paper or white microwave-safe paper towels are safe for microwave use. Food cooking bags also work well, as does plastic wrap specially designed and labeled for safe microwave cooking.

    Inappropriate Materials

    • Aluminum foil, plastic storage or grocery bags, brown paper grocery bags and newspaper should never be used in microwave ovens. These materials may pose fire hazards and sometimes emit harmful chemicals when heated.
