Your GE Spacemaker JVM1640 microwave oven may occasionally experience trouble heating foods during the course of its lifetime due to electrical or computer issues. Solving these problems is sometimes as simple as following GE-approved troubleshooting steps. Fixing your microwave oven will be one of your top priorities if you rely on it for cooking or reheating food in your kitchen on a regular basis. You won't need any special expertise to troubleshoot your JVM1640 microwave oven.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the electrical outlet behind the oven, as the fuse protecting the circuit might have blown, cutting off the electrical supply. Replace any blown fuses or reset any tripped breakers and try the microwave again. Ensure the microwave is switched on if your kitchen is fitted with power switches for its major appliances.

    • 2

Hit "Clear/Off" a few times and re-enter your cooking instructions. The computer may have experienced a temporary error. Unplug the microwave from the wall, wait a minute and reconnect the power. The internal computer could be scrambled after a power surge. Disconnecting the power resets the appliance.

Set the clock -- the microwave may not work unless it can accurately time its cook programs. Press "Clock" and enter the time using the number keys; 11:20 a.m. becomes "1120," for example. Tap "AM/PM" until the correct setting is shown on-screen and hit "Start" or "Clock," confirming the new settings.

Hold down "Clear" for three seconds until the "L" disappears from the corner of the screen. The child lock, when active, stops kids from using the microwave when your back is turned. Repeating this step reactivates the child lock. The oven doesn't heat while the child lock is active.

Ensure the oven isn't set to "Defrost" mode. Hit "Clear" a few times then press "Time Cook" for normal heating. Enter a time using the number keys; two minutes is entered as "200," for example. Tap "Power Level" until "10" appears on the screen and hit "Start." You must always press "Start" to activate any cook cycle.
