The space above a stove, or cook top, is wasted in many kitchens. Enough area between the top of the stove and the bottom of the cabinets above the stove is available to install a microwave oven. The stove hood with the exhaust fan and lighting will have to be removed. Select a microwave that has light and exhaust fan and is built to replace the stove hood.
Install the microwave so it utilizes the space between the bottom of the cabinets and the countertop. Measure before acquiring the microwave so you know it fits. Select a microwave that is meant to be attached to wooden cabinets. The space between the bottom of the newly installed microwave and the counter top may be narrow. Consider using it for smaller appliances such as a coffee maker, spice grinder or can opener.
A portable microwave sits anywhere the surface is flat and sturdy. If you use your microwave often, place it in a convenient spot next to the refrigerator or sink, for example. If you don't use it often, tuck it away in a corner. Make sure that wherever you place it there is an electrical outlet handy. You might even want to set up a snack center in the family room for the children. Teach them how to use the microwave and handle hot food safely. Place the microwave on sturdy shelving at a level easily reachable. Install a small refrigerator with cold drinks. Fill a few baskets with lids with snacks, paper plates, napkins and forks.
Modern sophisticated kitchens have a streamlined look with all clutter, including small appliances, out of sight. A retractable drop-down shutter attached to the bottom of the cabinets hides the appliances behind it. When the microwave is not in use it is hidden from view. Some appliance garages are built in and have several electrical outlets and under-the-cabinet lighting.
