GE Spacemaker Microwave Installation Instructions

General Electric is an American company that was founded by Thomas Edison in the late 1800s. The first GE electric stove was introduced in 1910. Microwave ovens, which use microwave radiation to heat foods, followed in the early 1970s. The GE Spacemaker microwave oven is intended to be mounted on the wall and the overhead cabinet above a standard range. This brings the unit up to eye-level and frees up valuable countertop space.

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen and remove the two screws from the mounting plate on the backside of the microwave with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the mounting plate off of the microwave.

    • 2

Slide a stud finder on the wall where the microwave will be mounted to find the wall studs. Mark the location of the studs with a pencil. Drive a small nail through the drywall with a hammer near the marks to find the edges of each stud. Make a pencil mark in the center of each stud once you find the edges. Hold a framing square against the wall on the center mark and make a vertical line along each wall stud. Measure the width of the opening where the microwave will be mounted and find the center of the opening. Make a vertical line with a framing square on the mark in the center of the opening.

    • 3

Hold the mounting plate against the wall where the microwave will be mounted. Ensure the tabs at the top of the plate are touching the underside of the upper cabinet. Place a level along the bottom edge of the plate. Slide the plate as needed until it is level, always keeping one of the tabs at the top of the plate touching the underside of the upper cabinet. Ensure the center notch on the mounting plate lines up with the center mark made earlier.

    • 4

Secure the mounting plate to the wall with 2-inch wood screws through the nearest mounting hole that lines up with the pencil marks that denote the center of the wall studs. Insert a Phillips bit into a power drill to drive the screws in.

    • 5

Tape the paper template to the underside of the upper cabinet. Ensure the center mark on the template lines up with the center notch on the mounting plate on the wall. Drill through the underside of the cabinet at the two mounting hole locations and the access hole for the power cord. Follow the instructions on the template to determine what size of holes to drill. Remove the template.

    • 6

Lift the microwave up and insert the tabs on the lower back side of the unit into the slots on the lower side of the mounting plate on the wall. Insert the power cord through the access hole drilled earlier. Rotate the front of the microwave upwards until it makes contact with the underside of the upper cabinet.

    • 7

Open the upper cabinet doors. Insert the two mounting screws through the holes in the bottom of the cabinet and into the threaded fittings on top of the microwave. Tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Plug the power cord in and close the cabinet door.
