How to Replace a Microwave Oven Light

Over-the-stove mounted microwave ovens have two lights, one in the oven cavity and one on the bottom of the unit to illuminate the cooktop surface below the microwave, while countertop microwaves might just have the cavity light. The oven light turns on every time the door is opened, as well as when the microwave is in use. The surface light turns on via a button on the microwave control panel. After regular use, both of these lights will burn out and must be replaced with new bulbs.

Instructions

  1. Surface Light

    • 1

Unplug the microwave from the wall outlet. The outlet is located typically in the cabinet above the microwave.

    • 2

Remove the screw from the side of the light cover, on the underside of the microwave.

    • 3

Lower the light cover and allow it to hang. The light cover on most microwaves has a hinge that prevents it from being removed completely.

    • 4

Remove the bulb from the light socket. Some microwave bulbs pull straight out while others must be unthreaded from the socket.

    • 5

Install the new bulb in the socket by either pushing it or threading it into the socket.

    • 6

Lift the light cover and replace the screw to secure.
