How to Tell If Microwaved Food Is Done?

Microwaves are a quick and convenient way of cooking leftovers and fresh food. A microwave works by sending radio vibrations into your food. The water and fat in the food vibrate as well, which causes large amounts of heat in a short amount of time, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. If you are cooking food in a microwave, be it fresh, frozen or leftovers, it's important to know when the food is done so you don't eat undercooked food.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange the food in an orderly manner and cover it with a lid to promote steaming. This kills bacteria on food.

    • 2

Place the food in the microwave and allow it to cook for the designated amount of time.

    • 3

Insert a food thermometer into the cooked food. Leftovers and precooked food should be at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit before eating. Beef should be 160 degrees Fahrenheit and chicken should be 180 degrees Fahrenheit.

Allow the food to stand for three to five minutes. After a microwave heats the food, it takes a while for the food to cool to the proper temperature.
