Emerson Microwave Oven & Grill Troubleshoot

Emerson Electric Co. makes consumer and commercial appliances. Emerson offers consumer-grade microwave ovens, including a combination microwave/grill that allows you to microwave, grill and brown foods. The Emerson Microwave & Grill is designed to work efficiently and trouble-free; but if you have a problem with your Emerson microwave, troubleshoot issues with it before calling the manufacturer.
  1. Microwave Power

    • If your Emerson microwave won't power up, check the power cord to see if it is securely in the outlet. Test the outlet using a lamp to see if it's working properly. Your oven won't start if the door is not completely closed. If the door won't completely close, check the door gaskets and clean them if they are dirty. If not, see if the gaskets are worn; replace them if so. If the door hooks or release button are not working properly, replace the microwave door. Check your circuit breaker and reset it if tripped. Examine your fuses and replace the fuses if blown. Disengage the "Child Lock" feature if set.

    Sparking

    • Sparking is caused by metal inside the microwave. Remove any metal cookware or aluminum foil. Examine your cookware, and do not use any cookware with gold or silver lining. If you see arcing (mini-lightning or long sparks), clean your microwave of food and liquid spills. If the arcing causes burn spots in your microwave, sand these spots with light sandpaper and paint over the spots with microwave interior paint. If the wave guide is burnt, you must replace the component.

    Cooking Issues

    • Always preheat your food to reduce cooking times, and follow the directions for cooking your food. The Emerson microwave display normally flickers when you are cooking foods. If it flickers a lot or shuts off while you are microwaving foods, contact a service technician, as inordinate flickering could indicate a problem with a major component or the circuitry. If the microwave works normally but your food isn't heating, place 1 cup of water in the microwave and set the microwave to high. If the water gets hot, your microwave is working normally. You may have selected a timer setting, not a cooking setting. If the water doesn't get hot, contact a service technician.

    Carousel

    • The carousel is the component that turns your food. If the carousel or turntable isn't moving, clean the bottom of the turntable and the carousel components. Ensure that you have properly positioned the plate on the carousel. If the carousel still doesn't work, remove the floor plate of the microwave and the carousel components. Examine the motor. If the motor is corroded or issues an electrical burning smell, replace it.
