My GE Microwave Won't Heat Food

No Power

• If your GE microwave isn't heating because it has no power, verify that the power cord fits snugly into the outlet. Completely close the microwave door, since the oven won't start with an open door. If the door is not closing properly, check the door seals, and clean them if they are dirty. Verify that the gaskets are securely attached to the door. If not, replace them. If you have experienced a power surge, unplug the microwave for a few seconds, and then plug it back in. Turn back on your circuit breaker if tripped, or change out blown fuses.

Magnetron

• If your microwave runs, but doesn't heat your food, verify that you have selected a cooking setting. You may accidentally set the timer. Test the magnetron by placing 1 cup of water in the microwave and heating the water for three minutes. If the water doesn't heat, your magnetron is dead. Contact a technician to help you with this repair.

Noise

• A buzzing sound usually indicates a major issue with your GE microwave. Turn on the microwave, and place a food item inside. If the microwave looks like it is working normally, but your food won't heat, you have a problem with an internal component. Generally, it means that the high-voltage capacitor or power diode is not working properly. Your microwave may also run normally, but not heat evenly if you don't hear a noise. This usually indicates that you have a problem with circuitry or the main circuit board. Do not try to change out these components unless you have the proper training.

Additional Components

• Your microwave may not work properly if you have a problem with the door switch or a fuse. Examine the door, and see if the door release or door hooks are broken or not latching or releasing properly. Generally, you must replace the whole door as you can't normally repair the door hooks or door release. Check the thermal fuse, which is located within the microwave's main housing. If the fuse is blown, don't reconnect the microwave to the power, and do contact a technician.
