Why Doesn't the GE Microwave Spacemaker Turntable Rotate?

The GE Spacemaker is a line of over-the-range microwaves produced by the General Electric Corporation. GE is no longer manufacturing these microwaves, but you can still purchase the microwave and parts from third-party dealers. While the microwave usually works without any problems, you may experience minor issues like sticking turntables. Only repair minor problems with your microwave, as major repairs are complicated and dangerous.
  1. What is the Turntable?

    • The turntable is the plate on which your food sits while you are cooking it. This plate rotates to evenly cook your foods. The turntable sits inside the grooves of the carousel, which is a plastic component that sits in the center of the microwave. The carousel has a motor. Underneath the turntable is a round circular piece with wheels, which also helps the turntable move.

    Sticking

    • If your GE Spacemaker turntable is not turning, it may be stuck in place. This is often due to food buildup. Remove the plate, and wash the base of it, including the grooves. Clean the plastic component and the grooves in the carousel. Clean the base of the microwave. Add 1 tsp. of liquid detergent and lemon juice to 2 or 3 cups of water in a microwave-safe container, and place it inside the microwave. Turn on the microwave for three minutes, and then wipe it down with a clean cloth or sponge. Reinstall the microwave turntable components.

    Not Turning at All

    • If the microwave still won't turn, the carousel motor may not be working properly. Disconnect the microwave from the power source. Wear gloves to protect yourself from shock. A microwave can shock you even if it's unplugged. Remove the base plate of the microwave. Try turning the carousel motor to see if it's stuck. See it turns freely after a few seconds. If it doesn't, examine the motor, and see if it's corroded or burned out. Motors usually produce an electrical burning smell when they are breaking down. Replace the motor.

    Broken Component/Additional Problems

    • The plastic component on your GE Spacemaker can break, preventing your microwave from turning. You must get a replacement piece, which you can order from third-party parts dealers. If your whole microwave won't work, verify that you have completely closed the door. The microwave won't start with the door open. The door gaskets can prevent the door from closing. Clean the door gaskets if dirty, or replace them if they are worn or warped. See if the microwave power cord is pushed completely into the outlet. Check your home fuses, and replace any blown ones. Turn the circuit breaker back on, if tripped.
