My Whirlpool Microwave Has No Power

The Whirlpool Corporation, headquartered in Benton Township, Michigan, sells consumer appliances, including home microwaves. It offers countertop and over-the-range microwaves, and it has both standard and convection cooking microwaves. Your microwave usually turns on every time that you need it. If your Whirlpool microwave isn't turning on, repair minor issues with it to avoid service calls. Do not attempt major repairs, as these are dangerous for people without training.
  1. Household Power

    • Your Whirlpool microwave requires a 120-volt electrical supply. These microwaves require either a time-delay circuit breaker or time-delay fuses. If your microwave isn't getting any power, verify that you have the proper type of circuit breaker or fuses. If the circuit breaker is tripped, reset it. Look at your home fuses, and replace them if they are burned out. Always install your microwave on its own circuit. Other appliances can draw too much power away from the microwave.

    Outlet

    • Only plug your microwave into a grounded, live outlet. Test the outlet with another appliance to see if it's working properly. If not, use another outlet. Wall switches regulate certain types of outlets. Verify that the wall switch is in the "On" position. See if the microwave is overloaded. Unplug it from the wall, and leave it unplugged for at least 10 seconds. Plug the power cord back into the outlet, and see if it works.

    Internal Components

    • The magnetron is responsible for creating energy. If this component doesn't work, your microwave won't turn on. Test the magnetron by placing 1 cup of cold water into the microwave. Turn the microwave to the highest setting, and let it run for two minutes. If the water doesn't get hot, contact a service technician. If the magnetron is working correctly, you may have a problem with the thermal fuse inside your microwave. Contact a technician to assist you with replacing the magnetron and fuse.

    Door/Control Lock

    • Your Whirlpool microwave oven won't start cooking your food until the microwave door is completely closed. If the door isn't closing properly, verify that you have removed all of the packing material. Move any items keeping the door from closing. If the door gaskets have built-up dirt on them, clean the gaskets. Replace the gaskets if they are brittle or torn. If the door latch or release button is not working properly or is completely broken, you must replace the door, since it's difficult to fix these components. Turn off the control lock or demo mode if necessary. Press "Stop/Clear" to cancel the previous settings, and reset the cooking settings.
