How to Remove a Microwave Hood

Over-the-range microwaves or over-counter microwave ovens come in a variety of models and colors. Some of these appliances come with a hood while others do not. Microwaves with hoods are two separate parts and not one modular unit. If you are installing a new microwave or replacing a hood unit, you'll need only a few tools and a helping hand. The hood can be removed easily and takes a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the dedicated breaker powering the microwave at the main electrical panel in your house, laundry room or garage.

    • 2

Open the cabinet doors directly above the microwave. Place a step stool under the open cabinet doors. Remove any contents in the cabinet.

    • 3

Unplug the microwave's power cord. Have a friend or family member hold the microwave from the bottom to support it while you begin to dismount it from the cabinet.

    • 4

Unfasten the retaining screws or bolts with a screwdriver or wrench, whichever is applicable to free the microwave and gain access to the hood.

    • 5

Unfasten the hood from the microwave using a screwdriver. Put the hood aside and remount the microwave, if desired. Fasten the retaining screws or bolts back in place.

    • 6

Plug the microwave back in and turn the circuit breaker back on.
