Amana Radarange Won't Heat

Amana's "Radarange" brand of microwave oven was the first commercially available oven of its kind upon its release in 1947. Troubleshooting a modern edition of the "Radarange" microwave that doesn't heat involves checking the oven's software and the magnetron for signs of a fault. Some minor problems are easy to solve at home and do not require special appliance know-how.

Instructions

    • 1

Confirm the oven is set to "Normal" or "High" heat mode; the microwave might appear as though it isn't working if you try cooking in defrost mode. Make sure you enter the correct weight or cooking time, if necessary, for your food. Always hit "Start" and close the door when you are ready to begin.

Press "Options" or "Setup" on the microwave controls and scroll down to "Demo Mode." Choose to deactivate demo mode if it is running; the oven will light up, spin the turntable and count down as normal when demo mode is on without generating heat. This function is designed to be used in the showroom to show the oven's features.

Open the microwave and make sure that the turntable and glass plate are correctly installed. Turning problems with the glass plate can lead to uneven cooking and heat distribution in the food. You may find food is only hot in places and at room temperature in others.

Put a cup of water into the oven and heat it at 100 percent power for two minutes. The water should be extremely hot when you open the door at the end of the cycle, indicating the magnetron is working correctly. The magnetron is defective if the water remains cold.
